Q&A with Teresa Scott-Carano
Is it ok to work with a Medicare Agent from another state?
Answer: That is a great question. You didn't ask but I am assuming you are wondering if the agent is legit and can in fact help you. So here are my tips: confirm the Agent is licensed and appointed in your state. If they are and you are comfortable with how you met/began your interaction then I recommend asking them about their background, how they help consumers in your state and why they are working with consumers in your state. Obtain their contact information, email, carriers they represent and license number for the state you reside in. You can always contact the Dept of Insurance (DOI) for your state and confirm the agents information then call the agent back and continue speaking with them. If you get a high pressure to act from the agent; I would personally end the call and contact your DOI and report the activity. You should not feel pressured in any way to work with them or take action.
Is paying for a high-end Medicare Supplement plan really worth it, or is it overkill?
Answer: Great Question! It depends upon your personal use of current/future healthcare and aversion to risk and or unknown costs. Most individuals work with a licensed agent to help them assess the multitude of factors that one should consider before deciding if a Supplemental plan is a good fit and if so which supplemental plan (for example G or L or N...) is best for them.
Do I need a Hospital Indemnity Plan if I have Medicare Advantage? What if I am hospitalized twice in the same year?
Answer: Great Question. It is important to understand these are 2 very different plans. A Hospital Indemnity plan is not a replacement for your Advantage plan. Review your Medicare Advantage plan (call member services or your agent) so you understand coverage details and potential out of pocket costs for a single or multiple confinements. Then I recommend comparing different Hospital indemnity plans to learn the daily benefit amount, benefit period and cost to meet your needs and budget. Consult with a licensed insurance agent so you can make an informed decision. Thank you!
Can Medicare pay for my groceries?
Answer: Great question! Some Medicare Advantage Plans may offer a stipend to cover healthy food. You should always check with your current agent to explore if you qualify for one of those plans. You can also contact your local area agency of aging to learn about non insurance options.
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: Medicare is complex and getting more so every year this combined with recent budget cuts to customer service result in frustration and lack of clarity. Medicare choices are not a one size fits all so I enjoy helping consumers learn and find a good fit.
I was already scheduled for total knee replacement when I took out my policy, will my supplemental plan G still pay?
Answer: In general if your surgery is scheduled AFTER your policy effective date and the surgery is medically necessary- the Medigap plan (Plan G) will be billed AFTER Medicare processes the claim. If it were me; I would call the customer service line for my Medigap policy and confirm your coverage and how it will handle your upcoming surgery. Good luck and take care.
