Q&A with Kristen Maurice
What's the financial risk of sticking with Original Medicare without a Medigap plan?
Answer: It is financially risky to have Original Medicare with no Medigap plan as Original Medicare has no maximum out of pocket. This means there is no cap to your medical expenses. This could potentially lead to hundreds of thousands in bills. It is always recommended to have either a Medigap or a Medicare Advantage plan to pair with Original Medicare to ensure you have a cap to your out of pocket medical costs.
What is Guaranteed Issue for Medicare Supplement plans, and when does it apply?
Answer: Guaranteed Issue means that you do not have to pass underwriting (health questions) in order to be accepted into a plan. You are "guaranteed" to be accepted, no matter your health history or pre-existing conditions. There are a few times when this applies, including moving out of the service area of a Medicare Advantage plan in which you are enrolled, your Medicare Advantage plan leaving Medicare, or your employer plan ending. You can find all of the eligible Guaranteed Issue Rights in a handbook distributed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services titled "Choosing a Medigap Policy" or on the Medicare.gov website.
I'm getting conflicting information about whether Medicare covers my specific medication. How can I get a definitive answer?
Answer: All Part D plans have their own drug list, or formulary. To get a definitive answer as to whether or not a drug is covered by a particular plan, it is best to check the formulary of the plan you are looking to enroll in. All Part D plans must post their formularies online for the public. You can find the formulary for a particular plan by putting the plan name and your state into a search engine.
What happens if I am already retired and collecting Social Security when I turn 65?
Answer: If you are collecting Social Security when you turn 65, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A & B. You will receive your Medicare card in the mail 3-4 months before your birthday month. You will want to speak to a licensed agent approximately 3-4 months before your Medicare begins to help you select the Medicare plans that best fit your needs. Working with an agent is at no cost to you, and you will get expert advice to guide you through the process of selecting and enrolling in plans.
