Q&A with Hunter Klaassen
I am planning out my mothers Medicare and long term care and it is quite stressful. What is some advice to make this process more manageable?
Answer: The best advice that I could give would be to find someone that you really trust as your Medicare agent. A Medicare agent isn’t going to let anything slip through the cracks.
Another piece of advice would be to start early 3 to 6 months ahead of the month of the person that is turning 65.
What is one of the the most common misconceptions people have about Medicare?
Answer: One of the main misconceptions of Medicare is some people think Medicare is free. That is not the case there is a monthly premium associated with it.
Another main misconception is that people think that Medicare covers everything related to your health. Medicare doesn’t cover dental, vision, hearing aids or nursing homes.
Another misconception would be that everyone gets automatically enrolled in Medicare at age 65. Generally, when someone is drawing Social Security, they automatically get it. If someone is holding off on their Social Security, they typically have to sign up for Medicare through Social Security website.
How can I use Medicare to cover occupational therapy for arthritis or mobility issues, and what are the limits?
Answer: There is a $283 part B medical deductible that is paid once a year in 2026. After you paid the first $283 out-of-pocket then Medicare part B will pick up 80% and you’re still responsible for the 20% moving forward.
There is no dollar limits. The main thing is to be sure that it’s “medically necessary”. They might require more documentation from the doctor to prove that you need it after a certain point. This is very common.
If Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are better for long-term coverage, why don't more people choose them?
Answer: I think there is various different reasons why more people don’t pick medigap policies. I would say a lot of people aren’t going with Medigap plans because of premium costs. There is also a lot of added value in the Medicare advantage plans with dental, vision, over the counter allowances, and fitness programs for free that people don’t want to miss out on as well.
I keep hearing about Medicare Part D changes for 2025. Will these actually lower what I pay for my prescriptions?
Answer: It is a situational to situational basis. The main part D change was they put a max out of pocket of $2000. Prior to 2025 they had something called the donut hole and there were people that paid significantly more than $2000 out-of-pocket for their medication‘s. Someone who is on mostly generic medicines might not necessarily see lower co-pays. But someone who was on a lot of brand-name medications that are super expensive could definitely see lower prices because of the $2000 max out-of-pocket cap.
What is the biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage?
Answer: Typically, Medicare advantage plans have networks you have to stay within. Medicare advantages typically have a higher out-of-pocket maximum. Many Medicare advantage plans require prior authorization for services. Medicare advantage plans may not travel as well as other coverages (snowbirds).
Who can help me figure out this Medicare "maze and alphabet soup" it's so confusing.
Answer: There are Medicare agents that help individuals understand all the parts of Medicare and help fill in all the gaps in coverages from the government. Agents don’t cost any extra money to have them go through things with you. They are just someone in your corner that helps you give you peace of mind and make sure you’re not missing anything.
Can you just have A and B and not enroll in anything else and still have good coverage?
Answer: Having just part A and part B is not advisable because there are still a lot of holes in the coverage. The main hole in coverage would be there is no cap on your part B coinsurance. Part B covers 80% of the medical bill and you’re responsible for the 20% with no cap on the dollar amount. When you start looking at huge procedures that can cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars and you’re responsible for 20% of however, high the bill goes that’s the biggest hole in coverage.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: I believe the value of an agent is having peace of mind that you are understanding your coverages. Also, a big thing is avoiding lifelong penalties from not doing things properly. In most ZIP Codes, there are many different plans available and that could be overwhelming if you are not doing it every day. I think another big thing is being able to call someone if you have questions in the future. And it’s free It can’t hurt.
How can I find new doctors in my network?
Answer: If it is a Medicare advantage plan that company that you are with normally would have a find a Doctor tool to find new doctors. You could talk to your agent. Or you could call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask them to help you find another doctor. The customer service team can also normally send a doctor directory to you.
