Q&A with Chad Michael

I'm getting conflicting information about whether Medicare covers my specific medication. How can I get a definitive answer?

Answer: The simplest way to find out if medication is covered or not to go to medicare.gov to look up prescription drug plans, and part C plans. Once you pick one of those options, they’ll let you list your medication‘s in there. It’ll show you all the plans and the cost associated with each medication. If you want to confirm that information, you can look up that plans drug formulary to research that medication.

I want to get a shingles vaccine. Will Medicare cover this preventive service?

Answer: The shingles vaccine is a Medicare approved vaccine.

Be aware that Original Medicare ( Part A&B) do not cover it.

It is covered under Part D (Drug Plan), or under a Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drugs (MAPD).

You will want to make sure you are going to an in network pharmacy and make sure they bill part D if you have a Part D drug plan.

Most doctors offices can bill part D but some don't ( will cause a bill). To avoid that most people get it done at the pharmacy.

Can my Medigap insurer terminate my policy?

Answer: Usually they can’t cancel the Medigap policy if the premiums are paid and fraud wasn’t committed.

Other ways Medigap policies can get cancelled are:

1. The Beneficiary loses Part A or Part B

2. If the Medigap Insurance company leaves the market.

If the insurance company leaves the market your policy will technically cancel but it opens up a guaranteed issue window to pick another Medigap plan offered in your state. (federal guarantee issue right).

I hope this helps

I am moving to a different county in my same state, should I look at getting a new Medicare plan?

Answer: Yes, it’s a good idea to review your Medicare plan when moving to a different county because plan options and costs can vary by location. If you have Original Medicare, you usually don’t need to change anything—just update your address. If you have a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, the plan’s service area or doctor network may change. Moving typically gives you a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to switch plans if a better option is available.
