What are the disadvantages of a Medicare Advantage plan?

With a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization), you may be able to see out of network (OON) doctors, but at a higher price than an in-network doctor. For example, an in-network primary care doctor may have a $0 copay, but an out-of-network primary care doctor may have a $25 copay. Because OON providers may charge more, the other copays (hospitalization, outpatient surgery, etc) tend to be higher in a PPO, so the flexibility comes with a price. Also, an OON provider must agree to treat you. Unless it’s an emergency or urgent care situation, an OON provider doesn’t have to see you.
The trend in the MA industry is moving toward HMOs. For people coming off of employer plans, this may not be a big change because many group plans are HMOs as well.
When you consult with an agent, they will go through your providers, medications, and other details to see if either of these types of MA plans are a good fit for your situation.

Advantage plans have HMO and PPO network of doctors
You may pay more out of network
Doctors will need to be checked annually for carrier compliance
Prior authorization are needed sometimes for tests, procedures, hospital stays, and medications
Plan benefits can change. Typically annually.
Some plans can carry a monthly premium
A PCP is required or will be assigned
Changing to a Medigap policy can be challenging
I have learned these possible disadvantages over time as an agent. These are less disadvantages as they are options to consider before choosing between Advantage, Medigap, and Medicare only.

There are many advantages to a Medicare Advantage plan. Those might include: dental vision, hearing and most importantly, prescription drug coverage in the same plan. These are known as MAPD plans.
If you have a good agent, they can help limit what seems like a disadvantage and help you navigate those things. They can also advise you on the plan that works best for you in your circumstances.
