I recommend starting your Medicare planning about six months before you turn 65, but the actual Medicare enrollment process generally starts about three months before your 65th birthday.

Those are two different things.

The six-month mark gives you time to understand Medicare, look at your current coverage, determine whether you should enroll at 65 or delay Medicare because you are still working, and start thinking through doctors, prescriptions, and the type of Medicare coverage that may fit your needs.

Then, about three months before 65, you can begin the actual enrollment process. Medicare's Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before the month you turn 65.

If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you may be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, so check your enrollment status rather than submitting another application. If you are not receiving Social Security yet, you will generally need to apply for Medicare yourself.

Ideally, I recommend that you start learning about Medicare about 6–9 months before turning 65. This gives you time to understand your options, decide which type of coverage may work best for your healthcare needs, and determine which plans your current doctors and providers accept.

You can generally enroll in Medicare beginning three months before the month you turn 65. If you plan to enroll in a Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, or prescription drug plan, this is when we can begin putting your coverage in place.

One mistake I see often is starting Medicare Part B when it may not yet be necessary. If you're still working and covered by an employer group health plan, your Medicare timing can be different depending on the employer and the coverage.

That's why I recommend starting the conversation early. We can determine when you actually need Medicare before you enroll.

If you are not already receiving your Social Security, you will need to enroll in Medicare no more than three (3) months prior to your effective date. Your Medicare A & B will be effective the first day of the month of the month you were born, unless you were born on the first of the month and then your coverage for A & B will be effective the month prior to that. For example: Birthdate of March 1, 1962--A & B effective date will be February 1, 2027. If you are already receiving your social security benefit, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare and will receive your card approximately 3 to 3 1/2 months prior to the effective date. Watch your mail!

You have 3 months before the month you turn 65, for example, if you turn 65 on Feb. 14, you can enroll as early as Nov. 1. However, your plan will not take effect until the month of your birthday, ex Feb. The earlier, the better.

Hello,

You can apply for your Medicare coverage 2 months prior to your birthday month.  So if your birthday is in January you should apply in November.  This will give you plenty of time to get your Medicare card and apply for either a Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan.

The simple answer is about 3 months. It will take Social Security about 3 weeks to process your application and send you a Medicare card. Then you will need to discuss insurance options in your area with a licensed broker or agent to determine what would work best for you.
