Can I change my Medicare Part D plan anytime, or only during certain enrollment periods?

Answered by 8 licensed agents

You may only change your Part D plan during designated enrollment periods. The main enrollment period is AEP, October 15th through December 7th. During the open Enrollment Period, January 1st through March 31st, you may switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to original Medicare. This would allow you to add a new Part D plan when you drop the MAPD.

There may be a few other opportunities to change using a Special Enrollment Period based on your specific situation. Contact a local Medicare broker and they can tell you if your situation falls into one of these categories.

That's a great question, and one that many people aren't sure about — so you're definitely not alone! Medicare Part D plans can only be changed during certain enrollment periods throughout the year, the most important being the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 through December 7, where any changes made take effect January 1. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage, you also have an additional window from January 1 through March 31 called the Open Enrollment Period. Life doesn't always follow a schedule, so there are also Special Enrollment Periods available for certain situations — like moving to a new area, losing other coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help with costs — that allow you to make changes outside of the regular windows. Outside of these periods, your current plan stays in place for the rest of the year, which is why reviewing your coverage every fall is so important, since drug costs and covered medications can change from one year to the next. That's exactly what I'm here to help you with, so you never have to navigate any of this alone!

Generally, no. That is a good question. You would have to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to change a Part D plan when not in Open Enrollment. Thank you.

Plans are insured or covered by a Medicare Advantage (HMO, PPO and PFFS) organization with a Medicare contract and/or a Medicare-approved Part D sponsor. Enrollment in the plan depends on the plan’s contract renewal with Medicare. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.

With few exceptions, your part D plan can only be changed during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP).

There are a few special election periods, like if you move to a new service area with new plan options, for example, but you would have to meet special criteria for each of them. An agent can help you see if you qualify for any of them.

You generally cannot change your Medicare Part D plan anytime; most people can switch only during specific enrollment periods. The main time is the annual Open Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7, and changes take effect January 1 of the next year.

When you can change

• Annual Open Enrollment: You can join, switch, or drop a Part D plan.

• Special Enrollment Periods: You may be able to change outside Open Enrollment if you have a qualifying life event, such as moving, losing coverage, or becoming eligible for Extra Help.

• Extra Help / LIS: If you get Extra Help, you may be able to switch more often, including once per quarter during part of the year.

The short answer is usually no—Medicare generally locks you in for the year. For most people, you can only switch your drug plan during the Fall Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from October 15th to December 7th. Another reason it is nice to have a broker help you vs. a 1-800 number.
