Q&A with Sonya Fortner
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: The thing I like most about being a Medicare agent is being able to take the confusion out of Medicare for individuals who are enrolling. I love interacting with people and am honored to have the knowledge and skills to educate people on their plan options.
What's the most frustrating misconception you have to clear up with clients about Medicare every year?
Answer: The most frustrating misconception that I help people with each year is about Medicare Advantage Plans. The public sees face book ads saying Never enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan because you can't see who you want to see or have a test or procedure your doctor orders.
I'm considering concierge medicine but already have Medicare. How would these work together?
Answer: Medicare will not cover concierge medicine because the concierge provider will not file a claim to Medicare because they are not contracted with Medicare.
How do you educate clients who are completely new to Medicare?
Answer: I educate clients who are new to Medicare by going over a presentation that I update yearly. I call it Medicare 101. In it, I go over what are the different parts to Medicare, Parts A, B, C, and D. When you are eligible to enroll, called initial enrollment period (IEP) and all of the special enrollment periods(SEPs). Who is eligible to enroll in Medicare, and how to enroll in Medicare. I offer to help if needed. Also, then I do a plan review, or ask them a series of questions. That will allow me to help them pick a plan that is right for the client, because one plan is not perfect for everyone. I explain the importance of looking up medications and offer to do that for the client as well as physicians, and pharmacy.
