Q&A with Mark Enright

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: What I like about being a Medicare agent is being a resource for helping people understand their choices and options. Many are unaware of the benefits Medicare provides and I'm here to help them understand.

What's the trade-off between a Medicare Advantage PPO and HMO when it comes to flexibility?

Answer: A Medicare HMO plan requires you to get your providers and services within the network or be responsible for the entire costs. You also need a referral from your primary care doctor to see a specialist. With a PPO, you can go outside of your network for care; however you will likely pay a higher price than in-network. With a PPO, you can also schedule your own appointments with a speciaiist without a referral.

If I move to a rural area, how might that limit my Medicare Advantage plan options?

Answer: In rural areas, you will find yourself with limited Medicare Advantage plan options due to lower populations, lower number of hospitals and lower number of providers. You also may find prescription pharmacies further away.

What's the most misleading Medicare Advantage ad you've seen, and how do you explain the reality to clients?

Answer: Most of the misleading ads for Medicare Advantage have to do with costs. The important thing to remember is that Medicare Advantage plan costs are tied to copays, NOT monthly premiums. For example, if you are relatively healthy and don't go to doctors/providers very often, Medicare Advantage is a very low-cost option.

I've been on my employer's health plan but am retiring soon. What should I consider when moving to Medicare?

Answer: Do you like your employer plan? Why do you like it? What does it cost you? Many people don't have a clear idea what their employer plan is costing them. Also, is it important for you to continue with the same doctors and hospitals when you move to Medicare? It's also very important that you have an accurate list of your prescriptions when deciding on a Medicare option.
