Q&A with Marc Schermer
I have PERS Providence Medicare through year-end and must choose between UnitedHealthcare and Moda Connexus. Which do you recommend?
Answer: I cannot recommend one over the other without first knowing more about certain key variables unique to you. I want to ensure my recommended plan covers all your needed prescription medications. I'd also want to verify that your most-needed doctors and preferred hospitals were participating providers in the recommended plan. Then, and only then, would I recommend a particular plan.
Does Medicare cover Spiriva?
Answer: Yes, Spiriva is widely covered by most Medicare drug plans, including Medicare Advantage plans, but it may be subject to a plan's annual deductible. A much lower-cost generic, tiotropium, is also covered by Medicare Part D plans. Some drug discount cards, such as GoodRx, offer tiotropium at very favorable prices.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Navigating Medicare can feel pretty overwhelming, but partnering with a licensed agent takes the stress out of the process, matches you with the right plan, and keeps you from making costly mistakes—all completely free. Think of an agent as your personal Medicare guide who does the boring homework for you by shopping around multiple insurance companies, checking that your favorite doctors and specific medications are covered, and keeping you on track with strict deadlines, so you avoid paying lifetime penalties. Because insurance companies pay them directly, their help will never cost you a dime, and they stay in your corner year after year to review your coverage and advocate for you if any billing or claims issues pop up.
