About Me
Hello! After more than 40 years in the insurance industry, I’ve learned that what matters most isn’t the policies — it’s the people behind them. I work closely with individuals who are new to Medicare, as well as those reviewing their coverage each year. My goal is simple: make the process easier, clearer, and far less stressful. Medicare can feel overwhelming, especially with all the choices available. I take the time to listen, understand your needs, and walk you through your options in a way that feels comfortable and pressure free.
When we work together, you can expect honesty, patience, and a commitment to finding the plan that truly fits your life. I’m here to answer questions, clear up confusion, and make sure you feel supported every step of the way.
Medicare is a big decision, but you don’t have to make it alone. I’m here to help you feel confident, protected, and ready for the next chapter.
Q&A with George Barkley
What do I need to do if I didn't take Medicare at 65 and am now retiring?
Answer: What you do now, depends on whether or not you'll still have health insurance coverage options other than Medicare. Will you still be able to get coverage through the company your spouse works for? Are you a veteran? There are several things to take into account before deciding if you have to sign up for Medicare once you retire. Work with a trusted agent to find the best direction for you.
What is the best MAPD plan in South Carolina?
Answer: There are a lot of great plans in South Carolina. The 'best' can only be answered by the beneficiary that is looking for coverage. The reason is that everyone has different needs; doctors they want to see, medications they take, or health conditions they have. MAPD plans, like everything else in life, is not 'one size fits all'. This is why it's important to work with an agent you trust to find the plan that works best for you.
Do I need extra protection like Critical Illness Insurance if I am on Medicare?
Answer: There are many things in life we may not 'need' but are still beneficial to enjoying life depending on one's circumstances. Do you have a family history of cancer or heart disease? Being prepared in the event something occurs to you could prevent financial hardship. Even if you don't have a history, protection is a bit like investing in the stock market. What's your level of risk? Can you afford to lose a lot or do you prefer to hedge your bet?
How can I get dental and vision coverage with Medicare?
Answer: A lot of Medicare Advantage plans offer dental and vision coverage. Many carriers have different plans that offer different levels of dental and vision coverage so it's important to review this level of coverage just as much as looking into copays for doctor visits or hospital stays. A standalone dental and vision plan is always an option as well.
I've heard about Medicare fraud. What steps can I take to protect myself from scams related to Medicare?
Answer: One important step is to never work with an agent that contacted you over the phone where you did not get in touch with them first. It is against the law for agents to 'cold call' Medicare beneficiaries. If you receive something in the mail or an email from an agent, be diligent about researching their background. The best agents can easily be found online so you can see who they are, where they are located, and most likely reviews from other customers. Finally, the best way, is that once you find an agent that you enjoy working, keep them! Agents want to protect their customers from fraud as much as customers want to protect themselves. Stick with your trusted agent and they'll keep you safe and happy.
Does everyone over the age of 65 qualify for Medicare?
Answer: You must be a US citizen or legal resident living here the last 5 years to qualify for enrolling in Medicare once you reach the age of 65.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: There is typically no charge for working with a reputable agent. Most have years of experience to help guide their customers through a complex web of rules and product choices. They are up to date on industry changes and have their customer's best interest at heart. There's no need to 'go it alone' when the only thing the conversations will cost you is your time.
Why am I paying more for Medicare Part B and D than my friends? What is IRMAA and how is it calculated?
Answer: The only reason for having a higher Medicare Part B or Part D premium would be if you had a high income (according to the government) in any of the past two years. There is a 2 year look back that they use to check a beneficiary's income. So for 2026 calculations, they would look back at income for 2024 and 2025. If you are over certain thresholds, you'll have an extra amount you'll have to pay for your Medicare premiums.
