Q&A with Becky Subramanian
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: I enjoy being able to help my clients save time and money when figuring out the right plan for them. I also enjoy being able to offer guidance as they navigate their insurance plan.
Will I lose my Medicare benefits if I get married?
Answer: You will not lose your Medicare benefits (Part A and Part B or Supplemental coverage) if you change your marital status. If you are receiving state assistance to cover your Part B premium or cover medical copays, your assistance may be affected if you marry and your combined income increases above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).
Who qualifies for Medicare coverage if they are under 65?
Answer: Individuals on disability who have received the Social Security Disability Insurance for at least 24 months are eligible to sign up for Medicare before the age of 65. Other individuals under 65 that can receive Medicare are those diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). These individuals qualify for Medicare immediately upon receiving the diagnosis but may have to apply through the Social Security office fortheir benefits.
What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?
Answer: One piece of advice I wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan is to completely educate yourself on why you are picking a certain plan and not choosing another option.
Too many times seniors only have one choice in mind and aren’t willing to learn about all options available because of what friends or family say. Educating yourself on Medicare plans helps you navigate better in the future.
Each senior’s health experience is unique so talking to a trusted and well informed broker can help identify your priorities and the best plan for you. Be sure to ask LOTS of questions!
Are some Medicare Advantage providers better than others?
Answer: Some Medicare Advantage plans can be better for individuals depending on needs (i.e. travel out of state, ease of communicating with member services, size of network, extra benefits offered).
Medicare does rate Medicare Advantage plans with a Star Rating (1 to 5).The higher the star rating, the more preferrable the plan. Ratings are based on several factors including member surveys, customer service, etc.
Meeting with a licensed and qualified broker will help you determine what your main health priorities are and what plans will be most beneficial to you.
Can I backdate my Medicare enrollment if I missed my initial window due to a medical emergency?
Answer: You will not be able to backdate your enrollment. However, if you were in a medical emergency that required hospitalization, there is a special enrollment period that would allow you to still sign up for Medicare. If you were not in the hospital, you will have to wait for the next General Enrollment Period (Jan 1 - Mar 31) in order to get signed up.
