Q&A with Susan Rittenberry

Is it better to update your Medicare plan often, or to get a plan that will work long term?

Answer: Concerning Medicare Advantage plans or prescription drug plans, it is always a good idea to contact your agent/broker at least yearly to update your information (such as physicians and medication). Plan formularies can change from one year to the next, so you will want to confirm you are still on the best plan for your current situation.

How can I get dental and vision coverage with Medicare?

Answer: Original Medicare does not provide dental and vision coverage. There are stand-alone dental and vision plans you can purchase alongside a Medicare Supplement Plan. Or you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes dental and vision coverage.

How can I verify if a Medicare Advantage plan's advertised benefits are legit?

Answer: I would recommend that you contact a local agent and ask about the plan that was advertised. It's not so much that the benefits are not legitimate, but it may not be the best plan for you personally. Your prescription medications and physicians need to be compared to the plan's formulary and in-network physician list. A trusted local agent can help guide you.

Why is regular Medicare better than an advantage plan?

Answer: "Better" is a relative term. Both original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans have pros and cons. It is best to speak with a licensed agent to learn the differences and discover what is best for you.

I signed up for a Medicare Advantage HMO, and I'm wondering if I can see a cardiologist out of network without paying everything myself.

Answer: Unfortunately, no. An HMO plan requires that you see physicians that are in-network only. Generally your PCP can help find an in-network provider, but your plan will not pay for services from physicians who are out-of-network.

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: The thing I like the most about being a Medicare agent is helping seniors with one of the most important decisions they will make at this time in their lives. I enjoy making the process enjoyable and not stressful.
