Q&A with Rachel Tafoya

I'm considering genetic testing to assess my cancer risk based on family history. Will Medicare cover this preventive approach in my situation?

Answer: If you have a family history of cancer, Part B will cover some genetic testing. It needs to be deemed as medically necessary and it includes BRCA testing, Lynch syndrome testing, and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) for advanced (stage III or IV), recurrent, or metastatic cancer.

Can you help me understand Maximum Out-of-Pocket (MOOP) limits in Medicare plans, from your experience as an agent?

Answer: The Maximum Out Of Pocket in the Medicare Advantage plans is the maximum that you will be responsible for. They can be quite high. The Medicare Supplement part g plans do not have a maximum out of pocket and your responsibility is much lower.

What's the best way for seniors to protect themselves from Medicare-related scams?

Answer: Always treat your medicare card like a credit card. Don't give out your medicare information to any that you don't know. Hang up on unsolicited calls. It is against the law for medicare agents to call you unless they have your written permission. Also, they are required by law to have a Scope of Appointment form signed by you giving you 48 hour notice before they can call and talk to you about Medicare Advantage plans and part D drug plans.

Which Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap) offers the best value for most seniors, and why?

Answer: The best Medicare supplement plan that offers the best value is the Part G plan. It covers most everything except the part B deductible and covers copays and part A deductibles.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: A Medicare agent can show you what types of plans are available. They can tell you what the differences are between the plans and can give you the best options based on your needs and budget.

I’ve talked to a few Medicare agents near me already, and everyone seems to push something different. How do I know you’re genuinely looking out for me and not just trying to make a sale?

Answer: I always like to look at your needs and budget and go with what you need, I always explain all the options and let you make the choice for what is best for you. I always look at each individual person and go with what is best for them.
