Q&A with Lynn Hapke
If I live part of the year abroad, do I still have to pay for Medicare if I don’t use it?
Answer: Yes you do. If you were to cancel either your Part B or Part D for part of the year, then you would be subject to late enrollment penalties.
I've heard about Medicare fraud. What steps can I take to protect myself from scams related to Medicare?
Answer: Medicare will never call you on the phone, they will always mail you a correspondence to your mailing address. If you have concerns, you may call 1-800-MED-ICAR or go on Medicare.gov for information.
I just moved to a new state. Do I need to do anything with my Medicare coverage?
Answer: Your original Medicare A&B won't change, however, you do need to update your address. (You can contact 1-800-MED-ICAR). If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, you can use it wherever you live in the US, again, you need to update your address. If you have a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP, or Part D) or a Medicare Advantage Plan (MAPD), you will need to pick a new plan available in the new county you are living within 60 days.
Can I be denied for a Medicare Supplement plan?
Answer: It depends on where you live if you can be denied for a Medicare Supplement. In most states, New Hampshire included, you have a couple of opportunities to be "Guaranteed Issue", specifically, if you are new to Medicare Part B and/or you are in your initial enrollment period or if you are in a special enrollment period where your Medicare Advantage plan is dropping you. If you have been on a Medicare Advantage plan and want to switch to a Medicare Supplement plan, you will have to answer medical questions to apply. In most cases you will know immediately if you qualify.
How do you explain to clients that "zero-premium" doesn't mean "zero-cost" with Medicare Advantage?
Answer: When signing up for a zero premium Medicare Advantage plan, be aware that you will have copays and coinsurances. If you only use it only for preventative services, you may not have out of pocket costs. However, where you will find gaps in MAPD's will be with 20% coinsurance for items such as chemotherapy, durable medical equipment, copays for Physical Therapy, daily hospital rates that can be around $400 per night up to a maximum out-of-pocket. Medicare Advantage Plans are required to cover all the pieces that original Medicare A & B cover with some additional benefits not usually covered by Medicare, such as Dental, Vision, hearing, Over-the-counter items and some transportation costs.
Make sure you use a broker and ask lots of questions!!
I'm caring for my elderly parent with dementia. How can I get legal authority to manage their Medicare?
Answer: To get legal authority to manage another person's Medicare, you can use a Healthcare Proxy if you have one, or the "Authorization to Disclose Personal Health Information' from Medicare, which you can download from Medicare.gov.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: An Agent or Broker will know what plans are available in your area and can help tailor a plan that meets all of your needs. They are required to maintain annual certifications with CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) and the carriers they represent so that they will have the most up-to-date information on the options available to you. And there is no cost to you to work with an Agent!
