Q&A with LaNeice Baker

I'm retiring next year - do I need to do anything with my Medicare?

Answer: A few months before your 65 birthday you would get information for your Medicare options. If you are retiring after your 65 birthday then you would have your information on what you will need to add once you retire. Some employers have health plans that will cover you while your still working so you would not be on full Medicare plans (A and B). If that's the case then when you retire you can contact an agent to make sure your in your special enrollment timeframe to set you up with the Medicare plans you will need.

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: I can talk health insurance all day. I love helping people with one of the things we need most and that is making sure we are in good health and we have the coverage needed for when something happens. It is way better to have coverage and not need it then to not have coverage at all and have potentially huge financial bills and added stress. I want to make sure everyone knows what is availabe them. This isnt a one size fits all type of solution. I have fun in the building the coverage you need.

An agent asked me to sign a scope of appointment for before we could discuss my Medicare insurance or part D plan. What is an SOA? Is this normal? Are call centers exempt from this practice?

Answer: Scope of appointments or SOA is normal and legal practice for any broker or agent to ask for if you are wanting to talk with them regarding medicare. We are legally required to get this from you before we start talking to you about any plans. Yes, I completely understand it can be annoying and seem pointless at times. However we are legally required to get one and to send that SOA when we submit your application. When you sign one know you are not obligated by any means to accept the plan you and your agent go over in your appointment. Most SOA are invalid after 48 hours if an application is not submitted.

Will private hospitals accept Medicare plans?

Answer: Not all hospitals accept Medicare but majority of hospitals accept Original Medicare (Parts A and B). If you are trying to go to VA or miltary hospital that is usually where you would run into issues. If you are going to your general local, state hospital you should be fine. Again that is covered in your part A coverage.

What are the signs that it's time for me to switch my Medicare plan, and how often should I review my options?

Answer: You should look at changing your plan if you circumstances change. If you income is different Ie now make less money then before. If your health changes. These are important if you become eligiable for any Special Needs Plan. those you can change into anytime of the year if your health changes. Also a bonus is looking at the new plans that come out during AEP. Some plan adds benefits for the upcoming year.

I went with Medigap because I travel a lot, but now I'm paying a fortune in premiums. Did I make a mistake?

Answer: Different carriers have different pricing for each plan. We can look at which carrier can help save money. Plan N is still Plan N, but the price can be cheaper depending on the carrier. Luckily, we can change plans if one doesn’t work out for you. You are not stuck.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: My goal is to get you to your goal. You let me know what your want to achieve and I will give you the best advice to get there. You have questions on getting the best price for your prescriptions, which plan gives you that? Which Part C works best with your lifestyle. You can see all these plans and hear from your friends which plan they have or seen on tv. but that doesnt always means its the best plan for you. Thats what we discuss. No one wants to have to pay for something they dont use or understand. I help with that.
