Q&A with Kelsey Harris

Can I use a health savings account (HSA) to pay Medicare premiums after I retire?

Answer: You can but any funds used to pay for premiums would be taxable income. It is best to use it for out of pocket medical expenses not premiums.

How could a universal healthcare debate shift Medicare's structure in the next decade?

Answer: A push toward universal healthcare could shift Medicare from and age-based program to a broader baseline coverage model, expanding eligibility to younger adults. It might also standardize benefits and drug pricing across the system, reducing the role of private Medicare Advantage plans. Funding structures would likely change, with increased federal financing and possible payroll or income-based adjustments.

Answer: You can compare plans by entering all of your parent’s prescriptions into the Medicare Plan Finder or the insurance company’s website to see which plan covers them at the lowest total cost.
