Q&A with Deborah Krump

What happens if my dad’s income changes? Can his Medicare plan or costs change too?

Answer: Medicare can charge an IRMAA surcharge on Part B and Part D premiums if a Medicare beneficiary's income changes. This can be adjusted annually based upon taxes filed in the period two years back.

What's the projected impact of an aging population on Medicare Part A hospital funds?

Answer: The growing Baby Boomer population significantly strains the Trust Fund, the money that funds the Part A Hospital Insurance. With demand growing faster than payroll tax revenues, this is leading to a projected depletion of the fund's reserves by 2033... without legislative changes.

What should I do if I find out that my preferred hospital isn't in-network with my Medicare Advantage plan?

Answer: Choose a new Medicare Advantage plan during the fall AEP or in January during the MAOEP, Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. This period ends March 31st each year.

What's the biggest mistake seniors make when choosing a Medicare Part D plan?

Answer: The biggest mistake they make is NOT choosing one and not knowing they will have a Late Emrollment Penalty for that decision.

Does Medicare cover hearing aids, or do I have to pay out of pocket?

Answer: Original Medicare, Parts A and B, do not cover hearing aids.

However, some Medicare Advantage plans have coverage for prescription and/or over the counter hearing aids.

Do Medicare Advantage plans really save seniors money in the long run? Why or why not?

Answer: A Medicare Supplement is the best coverage, especially long term. No referrals, no networks or yearly contract to be concerned with. However, Medicare supplements do have higher premiums and do not cover dental, vision or hearing.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: An agent will have the training and knowledge of the plans, the networks for each plan and the experience of reviewing drug coverage.

I signed up for a Medicare Advantage HMO, and I'm wondering if I can see a cardiologist out of network without paying everything myself.

Answer: If you are in an HMO, you will not have coverage when you go out of network. If you can choose a PPO Medicare Advantage plan, that would give you the ability to go out of network and have coverage, but with more expense.

In the fall open enrollment, AEP, you can change your Medicare Advantage choice more than once. The deadline for a final decision is December 7th.

Hope that helps!
