Q&A with Christopher Villarreal

What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?

Answer: One piece of advice every senior should know before picking a Medicare plan:

Take the time to review all your options — not just the one someone recommends.

Plans can vary a lot in cost, coverage, and which doctors or prescriptions are included. What works for your friend might not be the best fit for you. A quick review now can save you money and headaches later.

What's the process for signing up for Medicare if I'm already on disability benefits?

Answer: If you’re under 65 and have been receiving disability benefits for 24 months, you’ll automatically be enrolled in Medicare. You don’t need to sign up yourself — Medicare will send you your card in the mail around your 23rd month of benefits, and your coverage will begin the first day of your 25th month.

Here’s what you’ll get:

• Part A (Hospital Insurance) – Usually free

• Part B (Medical Insurance) – Has a monthly premium unless you decline it

You can also choose to add:

• Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) or

• A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) for extra benefits

I'm turning 65 next month; what are the first steps I should take regarding Medicare enrollment?

Answer: First, sign up for Medicare through Social Security, especially if you're not already receiving benefits—your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your 65th birthday and lasts seven months. Next, review and compare Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans to choose the coverage that best fits your health and financial needs.
