Q&A with Christopher Randall
Does Medicare cover eye exams, or are seniors left paying too much?
Answer: Original Medicare does not cover routine eye exams. However, Original Medicare does cover medically necessary vision care, such as glaucoma screening, diabetic eye exams, and macular degeneration tests. Some Medicare Advantage plans do cover this.
How does moving to a new state affect my Medicare enrollment timeline?
Answer: It depends on what type of Medicare plan you are on. Medicare supplements travel with you any state in the US, there is no need to renew nor change. Medicare Advantage plans vary by the state and county in which you live in, more times than not if you move to another state while on a Medicare advantage plan you would need to change your coverage. The great news is most the time you enter into a “Special Enrollment Period” in which you can choose any Medicare plan with no health questions.
What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?
Answer: To have a thorough contrast between original Medicare with a stand alone drug plan and Medicare Advantage. Sometimes people only hear one side of the argument, however, it is best to see both sides. Also understanding that Medicare does not cover Long Term Care and understanding options outside of Medicare to help with a problem 70% of seniors experience.
What’s the best Medicare plan for someone with chronic kidney disease?
Answer: This completely depends on income and eligibility for Medicaid. There are plans that cater to chronic special needs that could be a good fit. Medicare supplements (depending on qualifications) can be a good fit because you are essentially paying a premium and the 20% original Medicare does not cover gets covered by the supplement so you aren’t worried about bills creeping up on you.
How do Medicare Advantage star ratings affect the quality of care I can expect?
Answer: The star rating system helps people understand what they can expect from the quality and performance of the plan. These ratings are there to promote transparency of what to expect in the advantage plan or prescription drug plan. Many factors determine the star rating such as patient/physician relationships, clinical outcomes, safety measures, patient experience on the plans and much more. So picking a higher star rated plan could result in a better experience.
Are there plans that allow me to continue to travel anywhere and be covered?
Answer: Yes there are. Medicare supplements travel with you wherever you call home and any doctor that accepts Medicare will bill your supplement. Also depending on the advantage plan and if there network is where you are traveling, they would cover as well. All Medicare advantage plans cover emergencies regardless of networks as well.
I have Medicare Advantage with a PPO, and I'm curious if my annual wellness visit is free or if I'll owe something for it.
Answer: Medicare advantage plan always cover one annual wellness visit a year for a $0 copay. Be sure to check providers and make sure they are in network with the plan.
If I move to a rural area, how might that limit my Medicare Advantage plan options?
Answer: In most cases yes. Advantage plans vary by the County you live in and the companies that offer them. More times than not a rural county might have limited options. However you do get the ability for a Special enrollment period if you move to a county in which the exact same Advantage plan is not offered. On the other hand, if you move to a rural area but you are still in a populated county you might still be entitled to the same plan if not better. So plans are more county specific not necessarily city/town specific.
