Q&A with Christie Adcock

When is a good time to start preparing for AEP?

Answer: I would recommend watching for your ANOC (annual notice of change) to come in the mail around September. This will be your first indication of what changes are happening and whether you need to prepare to make any changes. Of course, meeting with an agent who can advise on what the upcoming changes will be is always helpful!

I've had a change in my health condition. How does this affect my current Medicare plan, and should I reconsider my coverage?

Answer: Depending on the change of the health condition, it could affect out of pocket costs if you are on a Medicare Advantage plan. I would definitely recommend meeting with an agent to review benefits and coverage if your needs have changed to find a plan that offers benefits more tailored to your specific health needs.

Does Medicare cover memory care facilities?

Answer: Certain services for memory care would be covered, but not the cost of residing in a memory care facility. That would be benefits provided in something like a short-term care policy. Short term care policies can be an answer to a long-term care plan and more affordable.

What happens if I am unable to provide creditable coverage?

Answer: If you are approaching 65, creditable coverage is not required as long as you enroll in your initial enrollment period that starts three months before your 65th birth month, the month of your birth and continues three months after. Creditable coverage would only be required if you delayed your Part B. Then likely you would have a late enrollment penalty for Part B and D and the penalties last throughout your lifetime.

I'm on Original Medicare with no supplement, and I'm wondering how much I'd pay if I need an ambulance ride to the hospital tomorrow.

Answer: Ambulance benefits are provided under Part B - so without a supplement to pick up behind Part B you would be responsible for the 20% after you have met your Part B deductible.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Medicare agents go thru extensive certification to stay abreast of the ever changing landscape in the Medicare space regarding trends or changes in carrier plans. They are usually first to know which plans offer more benefits to fit a policyholders needs.

How does Medicare handle coverage for experimental treatments or clinical trials?

Answer: Medicare covers the “routine care” of clinical trials NOT items or services provided solely for research data collection or the investigational item itself.
