Q&A with Chris Bumgardner
What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?
Answer: I enjoy developing relationships with my Medicare clients. Prior being an Insurance Broker, my career was a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer. I worked daily with Seniors performing a variety of heart procedures. I made sure my patients felt comfortable and answered any questions. Educating Seniors and answering questions about Medicare is a necessity. Medicare can be overwhelming. My patients always trusted me as a cardiac sonographer, I want my clients to trust me as a a Medicare Broker. Trust is a Must!
I love the idea of representing multiple Insurance carriers to ensure that my clients can see all available options with different pricing. I always conduct a needs assessment to understand my client's specific healthcare requirements. I prioritize welfare over making a sale.
How do you educate clients who are completely new to Medicare?
Answer: It is very important to explain policy details to any Medicare client. Medicare is overwhelming. Repeat if necessary. Slow down, and make sure they understand before you move on. This will gain trust and credibility.
What’s one hidden Medicare expense that people don’t think about until it’s too late?
Answer: Skilled Nursing Facility Costs. Days 1-20, Medicare pays 100%. Days 21-100, the member pays a daily co-pay. After 100 days, Medicare no longer covers expenses.
Is Medicare Part A enough for hospital coverage?
Answer: Part A covers hospital stays, but it is not always enough on its own. Most people need more than Part A.
Consider Part B, covers Doctors, outpatient services and diagnostic testing.
Consider Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage, Part C.
Consider part D, prescription drugs.
Is Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage better? Why do you recommend one over the other?
Answer: I wouldn't say one is better than the other- it depends on what's most important to you. My job is to help you find the best fit for your needs and budget.
What is the biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage?
Answer: You are limited to certain doctors and hospital's (HMO and PPO networks), and you may need referrals to see specialists, if you go out of network, it can cost more, or may not be covered at all.
