Q&A with Britania James

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: I love being a resource for individuals and the community as a whole. I'm a Medicare Broker, which means that I'm contracted with multiple carriers. This allows me to help others find coverage options that meet their unique, individual needs.

What's the trade-off between a Medicare Advantage PPO and HMO when it comes to flexibility?

Answer: Under an HMO, individuals must see providers who are in-network with their insurance. HMOs generally have lower out of pocket costs and very large networks, so individuals are able to choose from many providers.

Under a PPO, individuals are able to see providers who are in-network and out-of-network. Seeing an out-of network provider could result in slightly higher co-pays.

What's the best way to avoid surprise bills for lab tests under Medicare Advantage?

Answer: Ask the billing office at the provider's office if there is an out-of-pocket cost for the lab or test. Most non-routine labs and tests require a prior authorization from the insurance carrier before they are conducted.

Your Medicare agent can also assist with any additional information that is unclear. As a Medicare agent, I am always happy to inquire with insurance carriers regarding coverage based on a client's specific plan and the lab/test in question.

My doctor mentioned something about Medicare not covering my procedure. How do I find out for sure before I get stuck with a bill?

Answer: Speak with the billing office at your doctor's office. As an agent, I'm always happy to assist you with speaking directly with your insurance carrier further.

My mom is considering switching to a Medicare Advantage plan because her friends say it's better. She's scared of losing her current doctors. How can we check?

Answer: As an agent, I can check the providers that are in-network with that specific plan. Each carrier also has an online search tool that allows members and prospective members to see which providers are in-network.

I've heard about Medicare fraud. What steps can I take to protect myself from scams related to Medicare?

Answer: 1. Only share personal information with your trusted agent or broker.

2. Never share personal information with solicitors who contact you by phone or email, especially those that claim to be from Social Security. Social Security will only contact you via postal mail.

3. Safeguard your Medicare number. Do not share your Medicare number with anyone except your doctor's office or authorized Medicare agent.

4. Stay away from "free" perks and services in exchange for your personal information.

*personal information includes your Social Security number, Medicare number, date of birth, financial information, name, address

Does Medicare pay for telehealth visits with specialists, or is it limited to primary care?

Answer: Many Medicare Advantage plans cover telehealth visits. It depends on the specific plan. Review the Summary of Benefits for your specific plan for coverage of telehealth.

If Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are better for long-term coverage, why don't more people choose them?

Answer: Less people choose Medigap plans because they:

1. Have a monthly premium

2. Do not cover dental, vision, hearing, or prescription drug coverage

Why are seniors losing Medicare Advantage plans?

Answer: Plans change each year. Sometimes, certain plans are no longer available in particular counties or states, and this could cause a member to lose coverage.
