Q&A with Belinda Lang
Are the Medicare flex cards and grocery allowance cards I see on TV legit?
Answer: Legit within that Medicare Advantage HMO/PPO plan, yes. Not all plans have these and fewer and fewer will have them for 2027.
Are there coupons or savings programs for Breztri for Medicare patients?
Answer: I have not seen coupons specifically, but you can try PharmStore, CleverRX, LowerMyRX, or GlicRX. PharmStore will be your best bet on this one, though, or better yet, call the manufacturer directly. A very expensive medication, unfortunately.
If Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are better for long-term coverage, why don't more people choose them?
Answer: Simple answer: COST. But that is somewhat of a shortsighted view. This is how I explained it to my Mom, who chose a Medicare Advantage plan before I was licensed in her state. She chose a Medicare Advantage with a $4800 Out-of-pocket max. Well, after a few years she needed to have some surgery. There were a bit of complications and she spent 3 or 4 extra days in the hopsital. she need to come up with $4800 for her portion. Well, 4 years later she needed the same surgery. Different spot, same surgery, and the likelihood of her needing some extra days, because of diabetes, was high. So if we take that $4800 divided by 4 years - she was paying an extra $100 a month for that "free" Medicare Advantage plan than she thinks she was.
Is Medicare becoming more expensive over time, and will it ever be unsustainable?
Answer: It seems to be going that direction.... as with everything else. What people don't realize is that 3 years ago, when the "Inflation Reduction Act" was put in place, it was set to happen over a 4-year period... so in 2026, we are now just going to see the very ugly head of it.
When they put this legislation in place they went to the carriers and said: "You WILL hold the cost of these medications down... and btw, we the gov that used to pay 80% of these very expensive medications, are now going to only pay 20% and you and the Medicare enrollee have to figure out how to pay the other 80%. SO carriers have raised the cost of the plans and some other medications that used to be $1.00 are now $.400 or $7.0,0, etc....
I hate to see where we are going to be in 2027 if the full implementation of the IRA is put into place. These are the facts, ugly as they may be. We have to lobby the current powers that be that they simply must right the ship and fix this.
I picked a Medicare Advantage plan last year, and I'm not sure if my hearing aids are covered. How do I figure this out?
Answer: Happy to help!
It all depends on the plan you have - but it will be in the materials you received from the plan, and/or your agent.
Look for your Summary of Benefits and the Evidence of Coverage - those are two important documents to reference.
If you tell me your zip code and full plan name - I can look in the quoting system to see what those benefits are for 2025, and 2026.
I'm in the donut hole and can't afford my medications. What are my options right now before the 2025 changes?
Answer: The "Donut Hole" does not exist anymore. Perhaps you got a new medication that requires the "deductible to be met". If you are now on a new medication, there may be vouchers, or samples from your doctor, or use the CostPlus, or PharmStore, or CleverRX, etc to try to find some discounts. Sometimes your pharmacist is aware of where best to go for the discount on that particular medication.
