Q&A with Aaron Green
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: Seniors of all backgrounds are our treasure. Whether it be just to give consultation, or to provide them with a more affordable plan, it fulfills me to know I have enriched their lives in some form or fashion.
Are Medicare Advantage plans really "free," or is that just clever marketing?
Answer: There is nothing clever in being misleading. As a broker I am contracted with many carriers. I don’t sway toward supplements or Medicare Advantage. It is really an individual assessment. There are MA’s with no monthly premium, but as with all Advantage plans you carry the copays of services that a supplement might take care of. It is a matter of where you want to budget your health care.
I've heard about new AI-powered diagnostic tools for early disease detection. Does Medicare cover any of these cutting-edge technologies?
Answer: To my knowledge not as of yet, however, insurance carriers are starting to use AI algorithms to see what their clients are searching for. You may not have a diagnosis, but carriers may soon be able to see if you anticipate you have a condition, and thereby affecting your premiums.
Isn't Medicare headed for a crisis with so many baby boomers aging into the system?
Answer: Not really, fraud and abuse are key contributors in healthcare costs. We should be supporting efforts to “cleanse” the system. Doing so will increase and enhance your benefits and quality of care.
How do I compare Part D plans to minimize costs for a mix of generic and specialty drugs?
Answer: The best way is to have a trained advocate at our office or in your home, populate your information into our Medicare interface. From there we can provide a detailed listing of what each prescription's tier listing is and it coverage for each drug plan. This activity and consultation is never and should never cost you anything.
How can I save money on my Medicare Supplement?
Answer: Page 9 and 18 of the CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) booklet clearly outline that all letter plan supplements are under the umbrella of Medicare thus providing identical service. Like any retail, the difference is in what each insurer charges you for that supplement. As with most things in retail you will most likely see an annual increase in the monthly premium for your chosen supplement.
The best way to save money is to have a trained advocate from our office come to your home and provide a detailed pricing from our list of many contracted insurers. In 9 of 10 homes we are able to find a more cost effective insurer to meet your needs. Many seniors deny themselves of dental, vision and hearing care in order to pay exuberant premiums for their supplement. We are able to find an affordable insurer, and often provide that extra coverage at still under the cost of the original supplement alone.
My neighbor says I'm crazy for paying for a Medigap plan when Medicare Advantage is "free." What should I tell him?
Answer: Supplements and Medicare Advantage are equally beneficial. It’s a matter of individual need and budgeting preference. Simply put, a supplement incurs a monthly premium in exchange for coverage of copays and coinsurances relative to the given letter plan. Some Advantage plans do not have monthly premiums in exchange that you do have to pay set copays and coinsurances. In most cases there is a dental, vision and hearing benefit associated with Advantage plans that are not covered by supplements.
