Q&A with Valerie Tobin
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Medicare agents know how Medicare works with different insurance plans. An agent who has your best interests in mind is not going to just be a salesperson, but a person you can go to when you have questions. This is something you can't always get with a website or toll-free number. An agent/broker who primarily works with Medicare is priceless!
Isn't it concerning that Medicare Advantage plans are taking over the system?
Answer: It's hard to complain when many of the Advantage plans start at $0 monthly premiums. However, it can be concerning with an Advantage plan due to the high annual out-of-pocket costs and the requirements regarding which doctors you can see. You lose the ability to have complete control over your health. You are leaving it to the Advantage plan to provide the services they believe you need. If the need ever arose to go to a specialty clinic/hospital such as Mayo, it would be rare, if not impossible, for an Advantage plan to provide a referral. Of course, the ongoing increases in Medical inflation don't help, as Supplements continue to increase premiums; many people switch to an Advantage plan and take a chance that they will not have costly medical needs. Unfortunately, moving from an Advantage plan to a Supplement can be difficult, as you must go through underwriting, and many can't meet the requirements. Ultimately, money is the primary driver behind the rise of Advantage plans.
