Q&A with Tracy Briley

I'm getting conflicting information about whether Medicare covers my specific medication. How can I get a definitive answer?

Answer: All medications can be checked at medicare.gov.

This is the most thorough way that you're going to find out if it's covered.

Formularies change quite often with pharmaceuticals in medicare. So you want to make sure that whatever plan you have covers it as well.

Can I enroll in Medicare if I've never paid into Social Security due to working overseas?

Answer: Yes you can. However you will pay for both Part A and Part B.

Even if you worked over seas, if you are an American Citzen, I would check your Social Security statement just to be sure.

I'm considering a smartwatch that monitors my heart rhythm for atrial fibrillation. Will Medicare help cover this type of wearable technology?

Answer: If you have a diagnosed chronic condition then Medicare may pay for a wearable monitor. However do not expect it to be an Iwatch or a Samsung, it will be most likely a fit bit or equivalent.

In what situations will Medicare pay for medical services in a foreign hospital?

Answer: Your supplemental will pay for these services, but only to a certain amount. Most supplemental plans cover $250.00 for out of country coverage. Even then you have to pay out of pocket and then submit the paperwork when you get back and wait to be reimbursed. Medicare Advantage plans do not cover out of country coverage

I'm worried about choosing the wrong plan and being stuck with it. How often can I change my Medicare coverage?

Answer: If you choose a supplemental plan or Medi-gap plan then you can change when you want. Just remember that the only time you will NOT be underwritten is during your open enrollment period. If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan then you can change every year. You can also choose a supplement plan during open enrollment and change during the annual enrollment period for medicare advantage.

I've had the same Part D plan for years, but this year my insulin shot up in price. Did the Inflation Reduction Act not fix this yet?

Answer: The Inflation Reduction Act has nothing to do with Medicare Part D. All pricing, rules and regulations for Medicare, including Part D and Medicare Advantage plans, are controlled by CMS, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which is part of Health and Human Services.

Always check your plans every year, as plans change every year.
