Stuart is so good at explaining the process of Medicare. His patience in answering questions is outstanding. I felt very comfortable and taken care of with his knowledge. I met with several other Medicare agents and they just did not make me feel comfortable or cared for. Graham life is who you need in your life. Thank you for all your help.

I met Stuart Graham and Conner Williams by attending a presentation on Medicare choices, including the differences among various coverage plans. The presentation I found was very informative and helpful with making the choice plan that would fit for me .Thanks to Graham Life Services for having a great medicare educational team!

I attended a dinner gathering in which Stewart did a presentation concerning Medicare needs. When the session was completed, not only did I enjoy a great meal, but I was enlightened to know that I could explore other plans, so therefore Connor help me accomplish just this. Gratification to Graham Life Services for all they represent.

Q&A with Stuart Graham

When is a good time to start preparing for AEP?

Answer: It should be on your radar when you receive your Annual Notice of Changes in the mail in late September.

However, companies don't release all their plan details until October 1st—even to agents! This means that the first week of October, companies are getting all of the links and Summary of Benefits live, and the agents are devouring them to figure out all the details.

Doing some preliminary research in the first week of October is okay, but you'll likely get the best info after the 7th of October and afterward.

What are disadvantages of HMO?

Answer: This question is hard to answer because it is very dependent on the HMO we are talking about. The obvious disadvantage would be that no out-of-network care is covered by the plan. But we have seen recently that providers refuse to take a PPO out-of-network, meaning the member didn't fare any better with the PPO.

Some HMO plans that have large networks are more stable and have better benefits than PPOs. Again, this is dependent on the plan and the area of the country.

Another potential disadvantage could be having to get referrals to see specialists; however, many HMO plans have removed that requirement, and you can see any in-network physician without a referral. Those plans function very similarly to a PPO.

I hope this helps, but I hope you can see it's not a black-and-white answer!

I have heard of some people's providers dropping their Medicare Advantage plans. Should I be worried about this?

Answer: Yes, this has become more of an issue lately because of inflation and the impact of the IRA on insurance companies and providers. However, it is still a relatively small issue in the grand scope of Medicare Advantage. Many plans maintain great networks and network outages are many times short lived.

What does Medicare Part B cover? Is it enough?

Answer: Medicare Part B is for medically needed "outpatient" services. Example: primary care physicians and specialist visits.

However, things have begun to shift in healthcare, particularly after COVID, and more and more major surgeries are being done outpatient now. Full hip replacements, knee replacements, and other surgeries are more frequently than ever being done as outpatient surgeries. Doing these surgeries outpatient helps prevent secondary infections while the patient is at the hospital.

The Part B coinsurance for the beneficiary, set at 20%, used to not be terribly high with standard doctor visits, but now the beneficiary might have to pay 20% of a major surgery! And with Original Medicare Part B only, there is no cost protection, so it's 20% of unlimited…

Now more than ever, it's very important to have a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan to help mitigate these costs!

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: There is nothing better than watching the stress leave someone's face after an appointment! They may start out stressed and overwhelmed but when they leave they're confident and excited. It never get's old and I'm thankful I get to do it every day!
