Q&A with Sheila Trumble

What is the biggest mistake seniors make when enrolling in Medicare?

Answer: They do not take the time to fully understand how the plan works and ask all the questions they have so they can really use all their benefits correctly. Also they don’t have their top three most important needs in mind so they can make their decision less confusing by narrowing down the plans that really meet their needs.

Do I need a Hospital Indemnity Plan if I have Medicare Advantage? What if I am hospitalized twice in the same year?

Answer: You don’t absolutely need it if you have Medicare Advantage plan. However it helps pay for the copay of inpatient hospital per day you are responsible for during days 1-4 or 1-5, or days 1-6 depending on the benefits of your specific plan. That could be a real help. It’s a very personal decision.

I'm confused about the different tiers in Medicare Part D plans. How do they affect what I pay for my medications?

Answer: There are 5 Drig tiers. Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Tier 4 Tier 5. Tier 1 Generic Tier 2 Preferred generic - they usually have a $0 to $18 copay depending on each carriers formulary. Tier 3-5 have a %cost of the total cost of the drug for a copay. Every carriers formulary has a different formulary of these ties with the copay. When meeting to discuss prescriptions this can s entered into the carriers formulary further defining the copay cost.
