Q&A with Roseann Vandevender

What do seniors often misunderstand about Medicare's coverage for long-term care?

Answer: A number of Medicare recipients believe that Long Term Care is a covered by Medicare and/or their Supplement plans. Custodial Care is not covered by Medicare. Private insurance or Medicaid can be used to cover this expense depending on your financial situation .

I live in California but might move to another state next year. How will my Medicare coverage change if I relocate?

Answer: When you relocate to your new home location you are eligible for a SEP (special enrollment period) . This will allow you to choose a Med Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan that is available in your new home zip code. It is best to get it done ASPP your only eligible for the SEP for 60 days (I Beleive)

What's your go-to strategy for helping someone decide between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Answer: I always list the pros and cons to their personal situation. This helps them make an informed decision. I also stress that a T 65 or First time Part B enrollee has a "freebie in" to any MediGap policy per Medicare rules. if the want to switch at a later date they might not qualify for the coverage.

If a senior is turning 65 but still working, should they enroll in Medicare or delay it?

Answer: Only if Medicare is better and less expensive coverage than their current plan. Most group health plans are very expensive with minimal coverage, but when you meet with a client that IRMA costs for Medicare might make it beneficial for them to stay on current plan.

Can I change my Supplemental/Medigap plan at any time?

Answer: Yes, you can change your supplement plan at any time if your health qualifies. The plans are a open to anyone who has part A and B . at their initial enrollment is your 1 and only grace period to enroll without having health questions in order to qualify.

I applied for a Medigap plan and got denied because of my health history-how is that even legal when I've paid into Medicare for years?

Answer: Medi Gap Insurance is not Medicare. You must have Medicare Part A &B in order to apply for Medi Gap Supplemental policies. These policies give you extra coverage the fill in the gaps in coverage that Original Medicare can leave open for you. Everyone has a "freebie in" when they first apply for their Part B Coverage. You will not be asked medical questions at this time everyone who applies will not "have a preexisting condition." You can always switch your plans between Advantage Plans (Part C) and Medi Gap during AEP. But after your intial year of Medicare you must health Qualify with the private insurers that provide the Medi Gap policy coverage.

I have heard of some people's providers dropping their Medicare Advantage plans. Should I be worried about this?

Answer: That may be the case. But if this does not need be a major concern because if they are involuntary disenrolled that will open up a SEP Special Enrollment Period for them to enroll in a new and maybe better plan for them.
