Q&A with Peter Scholl

Is there a penalty for Medicare Part A or B for a 65-year-old green card holder who hasn’t met the five-year U.S. residency requirement and has no other insurance?

Answer: No penalty during the 5 year residency requirement.

Once the five years is up AND you become eligible, there will be a penalty if not enrolled at the time of eligibility

I'm worried about choosing the wrong plan and being stuck with it. How often can I change my Medicare coverage?

Answer: Outside of your Initial Enrollment Period, you may change your Medicare Advantage Plan or Prescription Drug Plan once annually during the Annual Enrollment Period which runs every October 15-December 7.

Medicare Supplement Plans may be changed at anytime however, outside your IEP, you may be subject to underwriting unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

A licensed health insurance agent will help guide you towards a decision that will make you comfortable.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Turning 65 and becoming eligible for Medicare is a major milestone, and working with a licensed health insurance agent who specializes in Medicare can make the process much easier. Medicare isn’t a one-size-fits-all program, and having guidance helps you understand your options and choose coverage that fits your specific needs.

We take the time to explain the different parts of Medicare and help you navigate your choices—whether you’re retiring or continuing to work and need to coordinate with an employer health plan.

We also meet with you each year to review your coverage and make sure your plan still fits, especially as Medicare plans and benefits can change annually.

Our goal is simple: help you make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary costs, so you can protect more of your retirement income and savings. Trying to navigate Medicare on your own can lead to missed opportunities or higher expenses, and having an experienced advisor helps you stay on track.
