Q&A with Michelle Walls

Do I need a doctor’s referral for Medicare to cover therapy?

Answer: Your doctor or other health care provider (including a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or physician assistant) must certify that you need it.

I'm self-employed and turning 65 — how do I transition to Medicare without employer coverage?

Answer: Hello,

Your Medicare coverage will become effective on the first day of the month in which you turn 65. You should receive information from Social Security before that time. Be sure to let them know that you would like to enroll in both Medicare Part A (hospital coverage) and Part B (doctor visits and medical supplies).

Once you receive your Medicare ID card showing the effective date, you can notify your current insurance provider that you are transitioning to Medicare and request cancellation of your coverage effective the last day of the month prior to your birthday month.

I hope this information is helpful,

Michelle

I've been on disability for years and am about to turn 65. Do I automatically get Medicare because I'm on Social Security, or do I need to do something?

Answer: Hello,

If you are receiving Medicare due to disability, you already have Medicare Part A and Part B. When you turn 65, you will have a new enrollment period that allows you to apply for a Medicare Supplement plan without having to answer health questions. I hope this information has been helpful to you.

Does Medicare handle coverage for telemedicine mental health therapy?

Answer: Telehealth can provide many services that generally occur in-person, including office visits, psychotherapy, consultations, and more. Medicare may cover more telehealth services than those listed above. Check with your doctor or other health care provider for more information about the services you can get through telehealth.
