Q&A with Michael Fisher

How do I report a suspicious Medicare billing error without getting in trouble myself?

Answer: You will not get in trouble for reporting suspected waste, abuse, or fraud. If the issue appears to be a billing error, contact the provider’s billing department, your Medicare Advantage plan’s customer service, or Medicare. These errors happen and can be corrected quickly. If you suspect waste, abuse or fraud; your insurer or Medicare has a department that handles these reports. Customer service can direct you to the right person. Reports are handled under a no-retaliation policy, and your name will not be shared with the party suspected of wrongdoing.

Will I lose my Medicare benefits if I get married?

Answer: No. Medicare benefits apply to the individual, not to a couple or family, so marriage does not change your Medicare coverage. Marriage may affect Social Security benefits, so it is best to contact Social Security about that change. Marriage alone does not create a Special Election Period; however, moving because of marriage might. If you move outside your secondary health plan’s coverage area, you may qualify for a Special Election Period due to the move. During that time, you could change your Medicare Advantage plan or may have a guaranteed issue period to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: The best Medicare agents are those who represent both Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage carriers. To enroll beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage plans, agents must complete annual continuing education, pass required exams, and be certified by each Medicare Advantage carrier. Agents who offer only Medicare Supplement plans may not have the same requirements, as their continuing education is based on carrier guidelines rather than requirements from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). An agent who represents both Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans can better advise you on which option may best meet your health needs and budget.

So I heard something about Medicare drug costs being capped at $2,000 in 2025. Is that really happening or just talk?

Answer: Under recent Medicare prescription drug changes, the Part D coverage gap, often called the “donut hole,” was replaced with an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit of $2,000 in 2025. This limit is adjusted each year. In 2026, it increased to $2,100, and it will be updated again for 2027. The same law also created the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which allows members to spread their out-of-pocket prescription drug costs over monthly payments with no interest or credit check.
