Q&A with Roarke Andrews

How do you get paid, and does it affect the plan you recommend?

Answer: The insurance company pays me. They have determined that it is cost effective to have agents market and help individuals enroll as opposed to have payroll employees with retirement plans and benefit packages enroll members. As long as we do a good job taking care of you, you are more likely to call us with questions and not call the insurance company, and if we do a poor job, then you change to someone else.

It does not affect which plan I recommend, I have been doing this over 20 years and plan to do this for many years to come. If I do right by my clients, it will work out in the end.

Why am I paying more for Medicare Part B and D than my friends? What is IRMAA and how is it calculated?

Answer: The IRMAA is calculated based upon a previous year's tax filing. Depending on your tax filing status and income, you may be subject to the additional IRMAA fee.

I want to be proactive about my health. What preventive services should I be taking advantage of with Medicare?

Answer: Going in for your annual physical/wellness exam is a great start to be proactive with taking care of your health as well as giving your provider an oppurtunity to keep track of your health from year to year.

Why do some seniors end up paying lifelong penalties for Medicare Part B or Part D?

Answer: If they don't enroll in Part B/D when they are eligible or within 63 days of losing creditable coverage, they may be subject to the Late Enrollment Penalty through Part B and Part D.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: You should be able to get an independent analysis of the plans without bias. Second reason is that there is no cost/fee to work with one, so you get free advice.

What's the most important question I should be asking about Medicare that I probably haven't thought of yet?

Answer: Check to make certain that any medications you take will still be covered by your Part D plan next year. As well as to confirm that your doctor will still be in-network as well, given that there are quite a few changes in networks.
