Jim Herro, Medicare Insurance Broker

About Me

I am a local Medicare broker helping individuals transition to Medicare for the first time; whether turning 65 or 65 and older leaving employer-provided coverage.

I educate, you decide. I gather information and prepare an "Introduction to Medicare" packet to review with you at your home. There is no fee for my service. I am paid by the insurance company if you enroll in their plan through me.

Disclosure required by Federal Law: I do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information I share or review with you will be limited to those plans I do represent. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.

Q&A with Jim Herro

I picked a PPO for the flexibility, but now every time I go out of network the bills are outrageous. What's the point of even having a PPO?

Answer: Your question is more than valid. What you need to consider when deciding on a PPO is if it is a Passive PPO meaning your out of network medical copays will be the same as in-network copays.

What benefits are there to working with a Medicare Agent near me vs remote/virtual?

Answer: If by remote/virtual you mean that the agent is out of state or out of the community that you live in the benefit of working with an agent near you is that they have a presence in the community and more incentive to perform at a higher level.

My suggestion is to work with an agent near you that focuses on educating you so that you can make informed decisions and controls the size of their agency so that they are available with a more attentive, Hands-On approach.

How does getting married late in life affect my Medicare coverage or costs?

Answer: In Wisconsin it may affect your Part B monthly premium depending on how you file your taxes. I don't believe it will effect anything else as coverage applies to each individual (not a family).

What's the trade-off between a Medicare Advantage PPO and HMO when it comes to flexibility?

Answer: On the surface the PPO provides broader access to care. It may or may not and usually with higher out of pocket exposure to the customer.

How do you educate clients who are completely new to Medicare?

Answer: I gather information to complete an Introduction to Medicare packet that is streamlined to their needs. The information is reviewed with them at their home; I educate, you decide.

What is the biggest mistake seniors make when enrolling in Medicare?

Answer: Trying to educate themselves without the assistance of a local Medicare Advisor. Too important of a decision to go it alone.
