Q&A with Jill Fasbender
Will I be penalized if I do not enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?
Answer: If you do not enroll in Medicare when you turn 65 you could incur a penalty. However, there are exceptions to that rule. For example, if you continue to work past 65 and continue on your employer's plan, that has credible coverage (it's as good or better than standard Medicare Part D), then you can delay your Medicare enrollment.
What's the key difference in how Medicare Advantage and Medigap handle out-of-network providers?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans generally have networks that are accepted by each of their plans. Depending on the type of Advantage plan you have, you may not have any coverage outside of your network, or you will pay higher copays.
With a Medicare Supplement, if you use a provider that accepts Medicare assignment, you will always be in-network if you are in the United States, no matter which county or state you use your plan in.
What is the biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage?
Answer: The biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage is the ties to networks. Each Medicare Advantage plan will dictate which doctors or facilities can be utilized under the plan which can make healthcare choices difficult in some cases.
I don't understand how my friend pays nothing for their plan and I pay over $200-are these plans just totally random by ZIP code?
Answer: Medicare plans are based on zip code and county. It is very possible that someone could have different plan options and rates depending upon where they reside.
When can I change my Medicare Advantage Plan?
Answer: The next opportunity you have to change your Medicare Advantage Plan will be during the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7. The changes you make during this period will take effect on January 1 of the following year. There may be some special enrollment periods available to you before that, for example, if you move counties or zip codes. Reach out to Medicare directly or a local Medicare broker for further information.
