Q&A with Jennifer Ragborg
How do you get paid, and does it affect the plan you recommend?
Answer: CMS allows a service fee to be paid by the insurance company with the idea that I provide a service to you and will be available for your questions and when you need help. All the companies pay the same fee so my goal is always to find the plan that fits you. Unfortunately, for 2026, many companies are not paying fees which will impact my income and long-range plans. However, because I am a Certified Financial Planner, my personal and professional ethical obligation to you and all my clients is to find the plan that best suits you - even if I don't get paid.
My pharmacist mentioned the Medicare "donut hole" is going away in 2025. What does that actually mean for me?
Answer: It's true! After many years of promises, the donut hole is gone in 2025. The rules changed to begin catastrophic coverage when you spend $2000. last year, it was at $8000 of expense for you and your insurance company.
If you are on inexpensive generics, this really doesn't apply to you.
I got a call from a "Medicare agent" promising me free groceries and I almost fell for it. Why is this kind of marketing allowed?
Answer: Unfortunately, there are some bad actors in the industry who will try to sow doubt that you have a good plan for you so you will invite them into your life. Many of the promises including free groceries and "money back from the government" are available only to those on government assistance.
This isn't marketing nor is it allowed.
I've heard about IRMAA affecting my Medicare premiums. How can I find out if it applies to me, and how does it work?
Answer: IRMAA is a surcharge aimed at the high earning Medicare beneficiaries by using your Federal adjusted gross income and marital status. If it applies to you, Social Security will let you know how much your Part B and Part D will cost for the next year.
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: Educating Medicare beneficiaries about their choices so that they are empowered to make a good decision about their health plan energizes me. Whether it's a new beneficiary learning about the Medicare maze of parts A + B +D = C or how to build their coverage so that their concerns are covered or someone who has had Medicare for years but the plans keep changing, I find it exciting to walk them through the different options. Then I get to do it all over the next fall!
