Q&A with Jason Miller
Answer: Dental packages will vary a great deal from one plan to the next, so speak with an independent agent to find out if there are plans in your area that may cover more. Some plans focus their spending more in the medical areas, and some more in the ancillary areas such as dental and vision.
Answer: The Medicare Advantage programs are paid by Medicare to take over the billing and claims responsibility on behalf of Medicare. The monthly stipend the insurance company receives is substantial, and it varies based on the individual. The older the member and the more health issues they have, the more Medicare pays for them. Therefore, the insurance company does not need to collect more premiums from the member - they're already being paid BY Medicare.
Answer: I always start from scratch and make sure my clients have a good, fundamental understanding of how Medicare works. That way, the decision about what supplemental coverages work best for them is much easier to make. As a former teacher, it is essential to make sure your "students" understand the subject material before moving forward to the next sections!
Answer: Many seniors wait until the last minute because the amount of information they receive can be overwhelming. It's human nature to become so overwhelmed that they just ignore it altogether. An experienced, independent agent can simplify things and make them much more manageable. My clients leave saying, "Oh, that was much easier than I thought."
Answer: Well, if you use my referral number you will be speaking with one of the most experienced agents in the country. With 20 years in the business, and ONLY working with Medicare insurance, you'll be speaking with someone who KNOWS what they are doing - not just guessing.
Answer: While I am sure the telephonic agents will disagree, one of the most important characteristics of an independent agent is that they are accessible face-to-face. If you know where to find us and can speak to us in person, it does lend a lot towards credibility. I know a number of telephonic agents that are very honest and reputable, but they are the exceptions - not the norm. Not having a physical office location should generally be a red flag.
Answer: A number of factors can affect an individual's decision regarding the type of coverage they choose. People that have both Medicare and Medicaid often do not need secondary coverage. Others, who are very healthy at the time of turning 65 elect to go with Medicare Advantage due to it's low premiums and extra benefits. Another group that chooses Medicare Advantage are those that did not elect Medigap at 65 and are not eligible through medical underwriting and need coverage with an out-of-pocket max (as Medicare A & B do not have one).
Answer: It all depends on who is conducting the seminar and whether it is “educational” or “marketing/sales.” In general, any time you feel that something is being pushed or “sold” to you rather than something being helpful or “offered,” it’s a good idea to take some time to think and get a second opinion. Not all seminars are bad, but if you have a local, independent broker that is always the best source for plan information.
Answer: Medicare can be complicated, no doubt. The best way to remove the confusion is to use a professional. Always work through an independent broker to make plan choices. They are well-educated and trained to know the nuances between plans and to make sure you have the one best suited to your needs. And the best part? They’re free! Brokers do not charge for their services and have a financial obligation to the client, NOT the insurance company. Doesn’t get much better than that.
Answer: Typically, the answer is yes. Most Medicare Advantage plans (including United Healthcare) cover physical and occupational therapy with a copay per date of service. Plans will vary from region to region, so be sure to consult your plan's Benefit Summary to see the exact amount. Also be aware that you will need a physician's order to receive PT or OT. If you wish to discuss your particular plan in more detail don't hesitate to contact me.
Answer: As of this year there is no more Part D Coverage Gap (Donut Hole). Plans go through a deductible phase (some have a $0 deductible) then straight to Initial Coverage where your costs remain constant until you reach a $2,000 out-of-pocket max. At that point you pay $0 for your medications. Just as a heads-up, the $2,000 out-of-pocket calculation can be tricky! It factors in a variety of expenses, so it's always best to use Medicare.gov (or let your broker do that) to get precise calculations each year.
Answer: The most rewarding part of being a Medicare broker is being able to give back to the community. I consider all clients to also be friends, and helping friends feels great!
