Q&A with James Walton

My friend said she got a free annual physical with Medicare, but my doctor billed me. What's going on?

Answer: Medicare can be confusing; however, Medicare does not cover a "traditional" annual physical. She was probably billed because (1) her physical was scheduled as a routine exam instead of her annual wellness visit, or (2) her provider does not accept Medicare. She will need to review her Medicare Summary Notice to see how the visit was coded and then contact the provider's billing office. If she feels that she was billed incorrectly, she has the right to request a review or appeal.

I've heard about new AI-powered diagnostic tools for early disease detection. Does Medicare cover any of these cutting-edge technologies?

Answer: Yes, Medicare can cover certain AI powered diagnostic tools such as coronary plaque analysis, AI-powered analysis of electrocardiograms, AI-quantitative CT, and several others; however, full coverage depends on finalized CMS decisions and coding. Medicare is moving towards implementing more AI tools for traditional diagnostic testing, but coverage is going to depend on FDA clearance, coding, medical necessity, and specific Medicare plans.

Every year I stress over picking a plan and still end up surprised by the bills. Is there any way to just get peace of mind with Medicare?

Answer: The best thing to do is to locate an agent that you trust, that has your best interest at heart. This would be someone that will review your options, enroll you in your best opportunity, but also review and answer any and all questions that you may have so there are no surprises.

Does Medicare cover eye exams, or are seniors left paying too much?

Answer: It depends upon the coverage. Some plans cover eye exams 100 percent while others require copays. Depending on a client’s needs, would determine the type of coverage concerning eye benefits.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: It is a great opportunity to review a client’s current benefits and see if there is a chance to improve upon them. However, it is also important for an agent to make sure that we maintain a level of integrity, in order to provide a service that is in the best interest of the client. The number one priority- client interest first.
