Q&A with Jack Havice

Why not just call the insurance carrier directly?

Answer: You can, you'll pay the same cost whether you call the company directly or use me as your first line of defence when it comes to your health insurance. I deal with many companies and sit with my clients each year to shop them. If you call a company directly they might offer their "best" plan, but is it the right plan against everything out there?

How can I save money on my Medicare Supplement?

Answer: Shop your plan every 4 to 6 years. I would not recommend switching annually, but that is up to you as the consumer. You can also use the birthday rule if your health may exclude you from underwriting with the plans.

My doctor wants me to get several preventive screenings. Will Medicare cover all of these at once?

Answer: As long as your doctor accepts Medicare, they should be covered as preventive screenings are $0. On your annual wellness visit your doctor should determine with you what screenings are necessary, and you should also voice what screenings you want done. You may not be able to do them all at once depending on how your doctor has them scheduled.

What's the most cost-effective way for a healthy 65-year-old to structure their Medicare coverage?

Answer: You'll pay up front, or in the form of copays. It truly depends on your situation, and how much you may utilize the plan.

Can you get Medicare without Social Security?

Answer: Yes, you can. You'll need to apply for Medicare through Social Security (SSA.gov), and elect to start JUST your medicare, not social security. You'll receive a quarterly bill for part B premiums, you can elect to have it taken from your bank monthly on Medicare.gov.

If I have Medigap or secondary insurance, does it cover my Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles?

Answer: It depends on the Medigap or secondary insurance policy you are with. Plan F for people on medicare prior to January 1st, 2020 covers all deductibles, while plan G doesn't cover the Part B deductible.

Does Medicare cover Life Alert or medical alert systems?

Answer: Some Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) do cover medical alart systems like Life Alert. Traditional Medicare does not (Parts A+B) as they do not deem it "medically necessary".

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: We navigate the different options and plans you are able to go on with you. We don't charge for our service as we are paid from the carriers. We also make sure to update you annually whether your plan will work for you in the next year during the annual enrollment period.
