Greg was very well informed on all aspects of Medicare. All this information at once can be quite overwhelming. Greg laid it all out in simple terms that my wife and I could better understand. He was very polite with his help with the Medicare supplement insurance. Hats off to you Greg!

Q&A with Greg Milliser

My diabetes medication is super expensive, and I've heard horror stories about Part D not covering what people need. Should I go standalone Part D or get it through a Medicare Advantage plan?

Answer: Not having a drug covered by a Part D plan is actually very rare. Generally, there is no difference between how a stand-alone PDP plan and a Medicare Advantage plan would cover the same medication. The best thing to do would be to have a licensed agent, like myself, help you compare how the two different types of drug plans would cover your specific medication and then you could make an informed decision on which way would be best for for you.

Does Medicare cover emergency care if I'm traveling in a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico?

Answer: Because Puerto Rico is considered a part of the United States, Medicare extends full coverage to your travel there. Travel to Puerto Rico is not viewed as overseas travel where coverage is limited to emergencies.

I use a continuous glucose monitor for my diabetes that connects to my smartphone. Will Medicare cover this technology for someone with my condition?

Answer: Yes, Medicare covers continuous glucose monitors under Part D ( Drug Coverage) of Medicare. In order for you to receive the coverage you must have a stand-alone drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

I'm confused about when I can change my Medicare plan. Can you clarify the different enrollment periods for me?

Answer: The answer to this depends on the Medicare plan you are wanting to change. If you are talking about your Medicare Supplement you are able to change that plan any time during the year, you simply need to fill out an application and go through the underwriting process. If you are asking about your Prescription Drug Plan or your Medicare Advantage plan you will either have an Special Election Period which you qualified for based on certain criteria or you will need to wait for the Annual Election Period which runs from October 15 - December 7th of every year. Existing Medicare Advantage plan members have an Election Period that is specific to them that begins January 1st and runs through March 31st where they can change their plans one last time before the next Annual Election Period begins in October.

How will advancements in wearable health tech (like smartwatches) integrate with Medicare?

Answer: Many of the Medicare Advantage plans are integrating wearable health tech into their plans. There are several examples of plans offering members a wearable health item at no cost to the member as part of their preventive services. If you are looking to take advantage of wearable health tech, a Medicare Advantage plan could be a good avenue for you.

What benefits are there to working with a Medicare Agent near me vs remote/virtual?

Answer: People have always told me the reason they like to work with someone local or nearby is that they can see sit down with someone face to face and build a relationship with their agent. It’s good to be able to find solutions and do business with someone who can be with you whenever needed. Another great thing about it is when there are times that paperwork of documents are needed there is a much quicker turnaround rather than having to wait on the mail or find digital solutions that not all seniors have access to.

How can I make sure I'm not overpaying for my Medicare plan, and are there any tools or resources you recommend?

Answer: First you can compare several different carriers that offer the same plan. The plans are regulated by Medicare to contain the same exact benefits as long as the plan letter matches. (I.e. Plan G, N, …). The best tool or resource to use is a licensed insurance broker as we would be able to provide quotes from several carriers. We are contracted with several carrier to be able to offer their plans.

Can I change my Supplemental/Medigap plan at any time?

Answer: The answer is “Yes, you can.” HOWEVER, there are qualifications that must be met before the change can go into effect. In order to change any time during the year you must answer underwriting questions about your health history and have no disqualifying conditions. If this condition is met the policy will go into effect.

Can you describe a time when you helped a client navigate a complex Medicare issue?

Answer: Often times when Medicare beneficiaries receive a bill they don't understand or are unsure why they are receiving it in the first place, I am able to walk them through it and know what to do next and where to get the answers to their question about the bill. Often times the thing that needs to be done is simply ask the provider to resubmit the claim and the issue is often found that there was a mistake made in the coding or some other detail like that and once it's been sent again to the carrier, the mistake is found and the bill is corrected and the client never hears from them again. Having many years of experience with Medicare helps me to navigate those complex issues quite easily.

What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?

Answer: It would be good if seniors truly understood the difference between Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans and were open to both. There are far too many seniors who are biased against Medicare Advantage because they have been given misinformation by their providers or other people in the health professions or even friends. Both plans serve a purpose and both plans can be equally beneficial depending on a senior's specific needs and situation.
