Q&A with Ethan Coakley
Does everyone pay the same for Medicare?
Answer: Medicare does not cost the same for everyone. The most common misconception is thinking Part B cost the same for everyone. The standard Part B premium for 2026 is $202.90. That is if your income is less than $109,000 if you file individually or $218,000 filing jointly. Your plan selection will also matter. Some plans do not have premiums where as others have a premium in addition to your Part B premium. Another big factor is if you qualify for a State Medicaid Program. Another major factor is whether you qualify for a state Medicaid Program as this can reduce or potentially make your part B premium $0.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Great question! Honestly this answer can vary depending on many different factors. There are many GREAT Medicare Agents out there, however not all agents provide the same level of service, education, or expertise in the field. I would recommend making sure your "agent" is a broker. You want someone who contracts with multiple different carriers and who can lay out each option in front of you and then guide you from that point. This ensures you are able to see most or all of your options, and confirms the agent isn't pushing one specific company/plan to make a sale. There are many benefits to working with a Broker. I personally treat my clients like a family. I want them to know they can call me first with any questions/concerns. I pride myself in being with them before, during, and after the enrollment process, and I like to be able to keep them up to speed with changes in their plan. As a broker I study carrier info daily and am usually up to speed with any upcoming changes. You will never receive a bill from an agent or broker as the service is FREE. They can generally get in contact with the carrier quickly and are always there to bat for you if you need anything!
I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and my biologic medication costs $6,000 per month. How will the 2025 Medicare Part D changes affect someone in my situation?
Answer: If the biologic medication falls under part D then you will benefit from the new $2100 cap or (max out of pocket) under part D. Once you have $2100 in part D expenses, your plan will pick up the rest of your medication cost for the remainder of the year! It is important to note that this $2100 cap will reset each year.
