Q&A with Elizabeth Blackburn
How can I verify if a Medicare Advantage plan's advertised benefits are legit?
Answer: This is a great question. There are several ways to verify the MA plan's benefits. Ask for a Summary of Benefits (SOB) and then review the Evidence of Coverage (EOC). This is the actual legal contract for the plan. Medicare.gov is another unbiased resource that will provide plan details including co pays, deductibles, max out of pocket and drug benefits.
Does IRMAA go away automatically if my income drops, or do I need to report it to Social Security?
Answer: IRMAA (Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount) is based on income from the previous 2 years and it's determined by SSA from IRS data. So if your income decreases, IRMAA will automatically adjust with your updated tax information from the IRS, but it could take that 2 year window to show up. If you've had a significant decrease in income due to a life event, you should file an SSA -44 with Social Security to reduce it sooner.
How can I save money on my Medicare Supplement?
Answer: This is a great question because we all want to save money on our insurance premiums. There are several ways to save money on a Medicare Supplement plan including enrolling at the correct time, pick the right plan for your specific needs and shop the exact same plan across many different carriers. Med Supplements plans are standardized but monthly premiums can vary by carrier for the exact same benefits.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Clients that work with a Medicare agent receive an advocate who provides guidance and can tailor recommendations around your specific needs. Our job is to simplify the process, provide comparisons about the different options and help with ongoing annual reviews. Working with a Medicare agent is a free service and we can help avoid costly mistakes like missing enrollment deadlines.
