Q&A with Elizabeth Baron
If I have been on disabilty due to an accident, do I qualify for Medicare Insurance?
Answer: Once you've been receiving SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) benefits for 24 months, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare. Your Medicare card will arrive a couple of months before your Medicare effective date. When it arrives, you should contact a local agent to help you choose the right supplement plan to accompany your Part A and B. Please note that you still will be responsible for paying for Part B, unless you also qualify for Medicaid benefits.
How do I compare Part D plans to minimize costs for a mix of generic and specialty drugs?
Answer: You need to work with a local licensed agent. They have the ability to compare drug plans for you. It saves you the hassle of trying to look everything up. You should be checking in with your agent every Open Enrollment to ensure that you are still enrolled in the right Part D plan. Formularies change from year to year, as do your prescriptions. An agent will never charge you for this service!
How can I make sure I'm not overpaying for my Medicare plan, and are there any tools or resources you recommend?
Answer: First, are you working with an agent? They can help you make sure that your doctors are in-network with any plans you are considering. Then they can help you take a look at your prescriptions to make sure that you select a plan with the lowest costs on drugs. The biggest recommendation though, is to work with a local agent. Most agents will not charge for their services. If one tries to charge you, move on to another agent.
What's the most important question I should be asking about Medicare that I probably haven't thought of yet?
Answer: Can you explain to me the main differences between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans? How can I determine which type is more appropriate for me?
