Q&A with Donald E Oates, CLU, ChFC, RTRP
Answer: AEP applies to Medicare Advantage and Part D Rx plans only. It doesn't apply to Medicare Supplement. You would have to answer the medical questions.
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans sold in each state can vary also by the county you live in. There may be limited or no options in certain counties where there are not enough doctors to support a plan. Some plans could be sold in a neighboring county, but not in your county. Buy a Medicare Supplement and avoid the problem.
Answer: The gap or donut hole was replaced by the new maximum $2,000 out-of-pocket. Your overall drug cost should be less.
Answer: Enrolling in Part B when they are still working and paying the Part B premium when they don't need to. If you are still working and covered by a group plan, you only need to enroll in Part A. Enroll in Part B after you leave the group. You will still have open enrollment even though you may be older than 65.
Answer: It's pretty well known. Did you call some agents when you got your Medicare card? They would have told you this. You had a six-month window to enroll in a Medicare Supplement.
Answer: We work with numerous Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans. We ask questions to see which one you would want. I really don't care which one or company you buy, just buy one of them that works for you. You could also go without coverage and just have Medicare, but then you would have unlimited liability.
Answer: Yes, but only in Part A. There is no need to enroll in Part B while you are covered with group insurance. There is no reason to waste your money on Part B premiums while working if you are covered with insurance at work.
Answer: Yes, if you don't live in a state that has the "Birthday Rule." If you live in a state with the "Birthday Rule" you can change on your birthday without having to answer any medical questions.
Answer: If you live in a "Birthday Rule" state, you can change on your birthday without having to answer any medical questions. You have open enrollment. If you don't live in a "Birthday Rule" state, you would have to answer the medical questions for a new Medicare Supplement or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) or have an SEP (Special Enrollment Period).
Answer: It doesn't cost anything to work with an agent, and they probably have access to many companies so it may save you time. We have access to a software program that has may Medicare Supplement company's rates ranked from the lowest premium to the highest. This saves you time and money.
Answer: It's illegal for agents to randomly call you unless you contacted them first, but the government doesn't seem to care about shutting down this type of activity. Marketing groups from around the country and out of the country call day and night from untraceable phone numbers so they get away with it. The Internet has ruined the business. Many plans do include OTC and groceries, so that is actually legit.
