Q&A with Comfort Olude
What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?
Answer: Please take a moment to reflect on your health needs. Do you visit your doctor frequently? Are you on any medications? By understanding what you need, you can pick the right plan. For instance, if you find yourself at the doctor's office more than you'd like, a plan with lower co-pay might be your best option.
I'm turning 65 soon, when can I enroll in Medicare?
Answer: You have a seven-month window to enroll in Medicare, starting three months before you turn 65 and ending three months after your birthday month.
Missing this window can lead to penalties or delayed coverage.
I've got Medigap Plan C, and I'm curious if my recent bloodwork is included or if I need to budget for extra costs.
Answer: The bloodwork is included in your Medigap plan C under the Part B benefits.
The plan C covers 100% of your Part B coinsurance or copayment.
Can I switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Supplemental/Medigap plan during the Annual Enrollment Period without answering health questions?
Answer: Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), this is also referred to as the " Open Enrollment" occurs from October 15th through December 7. This is the period that you can switch from a Medicare Advantage, return to the Original Medicare and enroll in a supplemental/Medigap plan.
As a senior, what should I know about the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage before I choose?
Answer: Basic Original Medicare by itself covers Part A (hospital stays) and Part B
( doctor visits). You usually pay a monthly Part B premium, which is paid by Social Security Administration from your benefits, and you must meet yearly deductibles. Original Medicare will then cover 80% of the approved amount, and you're responsible for the remaining 20% of the cost of care. There is no limit to your out-of-pocket cost each year. You may need a supplemental insurance plan to cover 20% of the cost of care and prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Advantage plans are more comprehensive plans that support your entire well-being, so you can live a better, healthier life. You usually pay a monthly Part B premium, which is paid by Social Security from your benefits.
In one package, it gives you Part A and Part B coverage, plus Part C coverage.
Many plans also include Part D prescription drug coverage. It has limited out-of-pocket cost, It has more predictable co-pays, and a cap to your yearly out-of-pocket expenses.
Am I eligible for a Special Enrollment Period if I lose employer coverage?
Answer: Yes, you are eligible for a Special Enrollment Period if you lose
employer-sponsored health coverage.
You are eligible for an 8-month Special Enrollment Period to enroll in Medicare Part B, or to make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.
What's the key difference in how Medicare Advantage and Medigap handle out-of-network providers?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans typically require that you stay and get your healthcare within a network of providers, and it has a potentially higher cost for out-of-network care. Meanwhile, with Medigap, you can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.
I just enrolled in Medicare, and I've got my Part A and B, but I'm hearing there are gaps in coverage. What are these gaps exactly?
Answer: The Original Medicare ( Part A and Part B) only covers part of your healthcare costs. Beneficiaries must enroll in supplemental insurance plans to cover prescription drug costs, deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, and the lack of a yearly out-of-pocket limit.
The coverage gaps include prescription drug coverage, you can enroll in a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
Other gaps are routine vision, dental, and hearing. Consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans are an alternative way to get the Original
Medicare, Part A, Part B, and additional benefits.
I just got Medicare Part A, and I'm worried about hospital stays. How do I know if my overnight stay will be covered fully?
Answer: Overnight stay in hospital can be classified into two statuses (Inpatient and outpatient admission). If your doctor ordered that you need to be admitted to the hospital as an inpatient for medical care overnight, Medicare Part A will cover the cost of your hospital stay, including drugs, accomodation and meals for the first 60 days after you meet your Part A deductible which is $1,676.00 in 2025, for each benefit period. You will also pay coinsurance for days 61-90 of each benefit period.
If your doctor ordered that you be admitted as an outpatient for observation only, overnight, Medicare Part B will cover the costs, not Part A.
What additional coverage options are available for international travelers?
Answer: Some Medicare Advantage plans cover worldwide emergency and urgent services, which are subject to a $50,000 maximum plan coverage with a $140 co-pay, on average. The co-pay is not waived if admitted to the hospital for worldwide needed services.
