Q&A with Carrie Cordial

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: Most of the people I see for the first time are confused and frazzled about Medicare and what their next steps are. After a mere conversation, I can provide a peace of mind and that brings them relief which in turn brings me joy.

Aren't those Medicare seminars just sales pitches in disguise?

Answer: When I host a Medicare seminar it is purely educational. There is no selling at any of my events. I may be in the insurance industry, but I don't "sell" anything. This is the exact reason why I LOVE helping people with their Medicare. As a broker I'm licensed with all the top carriers. The insurance companies pay me directly when I can help an individual or family. I don't take payment from any of my clients. In health insurance all the insurance companies pay the same regardless of the insurance carrier. So, when providing guidance to someone I only make a suggestion based on their specific needs which are based on their location, medications, doctors, pharmacy, expected travel for the year and the list goes on. If you would like to know when my next public event is scheduled, I'd be happy to provide you with a date, time and location.

What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?

Answer: Seniors need to speak with a broker who is contracted with multiple carriers and can assist with Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans. There are many agents that only promote one or the other. They need to ask the agent if they are a broker and if they can help with both supplemental insurance and Medicare prescription drug plans.

I'm living solely on Social Security of $1,400 monthly and can't afford my Medicare premiums and copays. What assistance programs might help someone in my situation?

Answer: There are multiple assistance programs for individuals with lower income. I assist people with applying for the Medicare Savings Program. If they qualify then they would no longer be responsible for paying their Part B premium. I also help people with applying for Low Income Subsidy (LIS) also called Extra Help. If approved this would allow them to refill their prescriptions at a lower cost and in some cases pay $0 for all prescriptions. I'd also help with applying for Medicaid. If they qualify and are approved, their copays would be lowered if not reduced to $0 for a visit no matter the kind of visit.
