Q&A with Barbara Cleveland
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: I solve the fear of navigating healthcare by really listening, answering questions in plain language, and making sure people feel supported every step of the way. No pressure—just honest help.
Are Medicare Advantage plans really "free," or is that just clever marketing?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans aren’t exactly 'free'—that’s clever marketing. While many have a $0 monthly premium, you still pay your Medicare Part B premium and may have copays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs. The key is knowing what you're actually getting and making sure the plan fits your needs.
I'm confused about preventive services under Medicare. Which screenings are actually free?
Answer: Totally understandable—Medicare can be confusing! The good news is that Medicare Part B covers many preventive services at no cost to you, as long as your doctor accepts Medicare. This includes things like yearly wellness visits, mammograms, colonoscopies, diabetes screenings, flu shots, and more. It’s all about catching issues early, and you don’t pay a dime for these if they’re considered preventive.
I missed my Medigap window by a few months and now no one will cover me without underwriting. Why isn't this rule more well known?
Answer: You're not alone—most people don’t realize there’s a one-time 6-month Medigap enrollment window that starts when you first get Part B. After that, insurance companies can ask health questions and even deny coverage. It’s one of the most misunderstood parts of Medicare, and honestly, it should be talked about more. That’s why I make sure my clients know their timing options early on.
Can I change my Supplemental/Medigap plan at any time?
Answer: The short answer is yes you can as there is not specific enrollment period like for Advantage Plans.
However, depending on your situation you may be subject to underwriting (Health questions, medical records etc.)
