Q&A with Alvin Petitt

I'm enrolled in a Medigap Plan F, and I'm not sure how my emergency room visits are handled. Is there a copay I should expect?

Answer: With a Medicare Supplement Plan F, you generally have no copays for Medicare‑approved services. So almost all Medicare‑approved out‑of‑pocket costs are picked up by the supplement, so what you pay at time of service is usually $0, as long as it's a Medicare-covered procedure and the provider accepts Medicare.

When can I change my Medicare Advantage Plan?

Answer: You can usually change Medicare Advantage plans during Oct 15–Dec 7, Jan 1–Mar 31 or when you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

I'm worried about choosing the wrong plan and being stuck with it. How often can I change my Medicare coverage?

Answer: If you're talking about a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), there is an Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from 10/15-12/7 annually. You can change those plans within those dates. So if you choose one and you find that you don't like it during the year, you can change it during the next AEP.

If you're talking about a Medicare Supplement, those can be changed but you might have to answer some medical questions to see if you medically satisfy the new carrier's requirements.

I picked the plan with the lowest premium, but now every doctor visit feels like a surprise bill. Should I have gone with a higher premium instead?

Answer: There is no blanket statement for which plan is the best. And while premium is an important factor, that can't be the only factor. There are a lot of variables to making sure the plan you choose is right for you.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Using a Medicare agent gets you expert advice for free and saves you from the headache of comparing a million confusing plans on your own. They do all the legwork to find the best coverage for your specific doctors and medications without it costing you a dime.
