Q&A with Wendy Zapata

How do you approach educating clients who are new to Medicare versus those who are considering switching plans?

Answer: Good morning,

Every person has a different set of needs. I have a conversation with each individual and let them know what plans are available to them in their county. I break this down for them, including network choices, if this is important. This applies to the “new to Medicare” as well as folks wanting a plan change or options.

My doctor wants me to try acupuncture for my back pain. Will Medicare cover any of this?

Answer: Yes, Medicare covers acupuncture for chronic lower back pain. So Part B would cover a certain amount of treatments. Also, some Medicare Advantage plans offer acupuncture coverage.

I want to get a shingles vaccine. Will Medicare cover this preventive service?

Answer: Yes, Medicare now covers the shingles vaccine. Remember, it’s a series of 2 vaccines. So prepare for this.

Why is the new $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum for drug costs important?

Answer: Good morning,

This is important because it limits the out-of-pocket costs and has eliminated the coverage gap, which was very expensive to many.

Will I be penalized if I do not enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?

Answer: This depends upon if you are employed and if your employer provides your medical insurance and will they require you to enroll in Medicare or not. If you are self-insured, then most likely, if you do not enroll during your initial enrollment period, you can be penalized on Part B and Part D.

I hope this is helpful.
